68My Ah Ha Moment
This is an article about inspiration, transformation, and social change.
Just returned from walking my fifteen pound, white-Terrier mix, with an alpha-dog attitude we call Max. He is built like a little tank; he loves to strut his stuff. I think he possesses a big hunting-dog spirit that struggles to live in a little-dog body.
Before we got home, he had triggered a flock of crows into a panic flight. For good measure, he stood up on his muscular hind-quarters to intimidate the crows of course. As he danced with his sharp pointed ears, whiskers, and curly-cue tail, he communicated to me in strong non-verbal language: “If you will just unleash me, I will bring you back some delightful crow trophies.”
Needless to say, I laughed and told him there was no way for him to succeed with his mission, because the crows were already airborne. But of course, he wasn’t listening to me.
I recall another time when Max refused to listen to me. I had just gotten up in the morning. I opened the slider blinds in the dining room and in our master bedroom. Both sliders give us a picturesque view of our huge, rocky, pumpkin-colored berm, which is decorated with an assortment of baby-pines, strange bushes, and other wild, green things.
All of a sudden, Max went totally ballistic. He started barking and running from one slider to the other. I told him to stop but his frenzy and momentum only increased. So I looked out at the berm from the dining room slider to see what was agitating Max so much. Oh my, couldn’t believe my eyes. There were two foxes playing chase their tails, running around, darting under the wild, green things. What’s more, to my astonishment, they were not red foxes but blue ones!
This was an “ah ha” moment for me. I hadn’t known that blue foxes existed. (Did you?) And my beloved Max had brought them to my attention. Wow!
My spirit soared; for a brief moment, time stood still. It felt deliciously good to be alive. Why? Because I realized there is more to life than I know.
Sometimes it helps to embrace the mystery in life when crap confronts us. If you have been watching the news media lately, you probably know that lots of people are demonstrating against Wall Street, corporate greed, homelessness, joblessness, poverty, politicians out of touch, and a general sense that something is terribly wrong in America.
Clearly it frustrates me to realize that hunger exists in America and in the world. It’s not okay that too many of the mentally ill are living on our cold and dangerous city streets. Nobody should have to go bankrupt over medical bills. Nobody should be without a job. College graduates shouldn’t have to deal with monstrous tuition debt that can reach as high as $60,000 or more. And to top it off, we have elected officials who refuse to compromise; so we can’t get anything done to fix such needless, human suffering.
It is a mystery to my why so many people are hurting in this country and around the world. I feel frustrated, overwhelmed, depressed.
Although, I don’t know how to solve the world’s problems, I can share with you my “ah ha” moments. We can let this Light shine and pass it forward to others.
For me, I have decided to volunteer with my wife, at a local thrift-store, which supports our Human Society. Max by the way, is a rescued dog. I’m also working on a project in our little town of Cave Junction, Oregon to start a poetry slam. Through the power of the written and spoken word, I’m trying to give those who have been silent too long an opportunity to find their voice.
Blue foxes exist; heroes exist. Change is possible. Let’s start with treasuring and sharing those blue fox moments.

For me a miracle signifies unexpected relief from emotional or physical suffering. But, maybe what appears as miraculous is not so unusual. Maybe it's all about a positive process of manifesting unlimited possibilities into immediate reality.

Wow! That was a stunner. A great piece with much fun about always eager Max. I like it. I also like how you digressed from the max story to our human problems, wonderful. I enjoy sharing in the light you give. Peace to you, Sir.
Miracles are everywhere. The crows are miracles. Max is a miracle. Sometimes we need reminded of what they are by coming across something new. Great inspiration about discovery, Gary.
Excellent post Gary. I agree with you and all those who have placed any comments. I still do not understand how having so many people looking for an opportunity to get ahead, to lead a better life for their families, who asked not to give them just put them where there is to work and get it. We see, not just governments steal the money wasted on people and the armies and weapons, but there are athletes who are paid in a year amounts do not even know what to do with that money, avaricious and greedy businessmen, and not just for the money, we see that there are people, who are best to their pet than someone else, who do not care what others suffer and look the other way. Parents are given everything to children without effort, making them useless and arrogant people. We see a society without values??, driven by consumerism and relativity. For me the only thing left is to start with ourselves, providing little or much of us to try to plant a change in the people around us, deal with the example of treatment of others first, and our social activities thereafter. Caring for our children and make sure to develop leaders committed to serving others. I'm not fighting with the wealth, but which has been the result of honest work and fair treatment and service to others. Most importantly, stay close to God and teach our children to love and follow his commandments. There is much to do but if more people do these simple things on our families and communities, sooner or later we have succeed in eradicating all the evil that afflicts our societies in the world.
Thanks Gary, I'm sure we can change the world (smile), you know how you eat a full elephant?... one bite at a time! So to change the world you have to go one person at a time, starting with ourselves. Peace and Light to you too! ... Jorge
What a great find you have there, Coach! Never in my life have I seen blue foxes.
True. Saturate Wall street is becoming a trend worldwide. Here in the Philippines, activists are also mimicking it locally dubbed as Saturate Mendiola.
Freedom is for those blue foxes. Max must be lucky with you rescuing him.
Thanks for posting this very inspiring A-ha moment.
You know, I have to state this because it's ironic.. About a week ago I had a dream of a "blue spirit fox" and until this post I never knew there REALLY was such a thing!! I had never read or seen a picture--that I even faintly recall. In my dream the closest colour I could come to describing it was the colour of the hottest blue flame. What colour were they exactly, to you?
Yes!--to the power of spirit guides! I've had this intense affinity towards the animal ever since. I have to figure out a way to capture it on paper. I believe it was sent to help direct me and it really has, miraculously. I'm so glad you experienced this, it's incredible. Namaste!
This is beautifully written and very inspirational. Thanks for sharing it and shining a light on things we can do to create change and transformation in our own lives and for others who are struggling.
Hope you are feeling better since your accident.
Voted up, useful, awesome, beautiful and interesting.
Will hold you in my thoughts and prayers today as your healing continues. Am looking forward to reading the new poem.
Where would we be without these little miracles. To have a light shine amid all the shambles gives us all a little hope and restores our spirits.
I loved the stories of little Max
It is an amazing experience to discover a beautiful fox like this and I enjoyed reading about it.

Thanks Gary, a well written and poignant piece about the harshness of reality and the miracles in life that we need to cling to. I've never understood governments that spend big on military and arms and let their own people suffer through poor health systems and education. Can't see the sense in it from any perspective. The US is a dicotomy of good and bad, wealth and poverty, humanitarianism and greed. I guess the world is like it, but the Us more than any other country has the power and economy to rectify and those in the positions of power just won't relent. I cling to hope as you do.
